Does teacher certification transfer from state to state?

Teacher license reciprocity allows candidates who hold an out-of-state license to earn a license in a receiving state, subject to meeting state-specific requirements. Most states have policies in place to improve reciprocity for certain teachers, but few states provide full reciprocity for all fully licensed teachers.

Can I teach out-of-state with a California credential?

Yes. Out-of-states candidates must hold a professional-level credential to qualify for California teaching certification based on out-of-state certification.

Can I teach in Ohio with a California teaching credential?

The state of Ohio will accept out-of-state applicants who either hold a valid teaching certification or have completed an accredited teacher preparation program outside the state of Ohio.

Can you teach in California without a credential?

Teaching in California is possible with or without a credential, which can be a single or multiple subject credential obtained upon completion of a bachelor’s degree. Serve as a substitute teacher for up to 30 days for any one teacher during the school year. If you exceed this limit, your permit may be revoked.

Can a California teaching credential be transferred to another state?

States allowing credentials from one state are not obligated to accept other states. Since California is a participating state in the agreement, persons with valid credentials from California are eligible to request a transfer of those credentials to a receiving state.
